Shana Tova fellow foodies. This month saw the closing of one of my favorite kosher restaurants in Tel Aviv and the opening of some more great street food restaurants.

If you are familiar with Culinary Market by Yochanan Myzels on Yafo, then it will be no surprise that his new store Croissant Chef, inside Machane Yehuda shuk, is just as delicious. As well as the sweet pastries, Croissant Chef serves makes interesting savory croissant sandwiches. I tried the croissant cheese burger which was made with a Beyond Burger and was very good.

Fish N’ Fries is a new fish and chips stall in the main covered shuk, from the owners of Ivgi Deli. Ivgi is famous for producing a large variety of smoked fish and cheeses. As well as traditional fish and chips, the menu includes Mama Ivgi’s fish cigars, platters of smoked fish and cheese (trial menu here).

L’ Entrecote Shop (Badatz) in central Tel Aviv is an extension of L’Entrecote restaurant. As well as the normal restaurant take-away menu, the shop sells traditional ready-made Shabbat dishes including a selection of salads, schnitzel, roast chicken, goulash, roast beef, meatballs, hamin, Moroccan fish (chraime), kubeh soup and stuffed vegetables.

HaShuka is a new shakshuka restaurant in Levinsky Market which replaces Hatahinia. As well as a traditional Tripolitan tomato shakshuka, the menu includes a Green shakshuka with mangold, spinach and chickpeas; Italian shakshuka with eggplant and Bulgarian cheese; Indian shakshuka with curry and coconut cream and Vegan shakshuka with tofu.

Mystery Box is a new concept in Tel Aviv where the people enter a dark room and have to choose if they want a fish, meat or vegan meal. While waiting, everyone receives a cube with a letter, which could represent a free meal, but normally leads to a mini philosophy lesson.

Not Kosher

Master Chef contestant Lior Ohayon has opened a bar in the Greek Shuk of Yafo called Sir Abdul. The trial menu includes Middle Eastern dishes with Arabic and Israeli influences.

Khudari is a new Druze and Arabic vegan restaurant in Tel Aviv, with dishes including labaneh, mafrum, schwarma, maqluba, kadaif, as well as a vegan knafe dessert.

Sushi Zushi is a new sushi restaurant in Tel Aviv which is the first Israeli branch of a Polish sushi chain, which also has a branch in London.  As well as traditional sushi dishes, the menu includes main dishes like Roasted Duck Salad, Spicy Beef and Salmon Teriyaki.

Sucre Group, the owners of Kitchen Market, Mashya and Onza, have opened Magreb Deli underneath the Alon Towers on Yigal Alon in Tel Aviv. The deli serves ready-made North African food for take-away.

Shula is a new restaurant in downtown Haifa serving Arabic food from the Tiberias area. The menu is still in the trial phase. Shula was previously a pop-up restaurant in Florentine in Tel Aviv.

News

Chef Cobi Bachar has left the Mamilla Hotel and is now the chef of Pastel Tel Aviv. Pastel has also opened a café next to the main restaurant.

Meatkitchen has closed its doors on Yigal Alon. It is unclear if the restaurant will reopen in a new location but for now it is completely closed.

Chef Victor Gloger is no longer a partner in Chloelys in the Hilton Tel Aviv and Hola in the Dan Tel Aviv.

TYO Japanese restaurant is moving to Neve Tzedek. The original restaurant will continue to serve take-away and deliveries. The new restaurant will open on November 1st.

Chef Assaf Granit has opened a second restaurant in Paris called Shabour, the younger sister of Balagan. The restaurant will be run by Dan Yosha who opened Balagan with Granit two years ago.
