Israel Foodie Roundup – October 2019

Since most of October was Chagim, it is not really a surprise that there is not much to report, but don’t worry, there is still some news for this month, as well as teasers on new places to look forward to.


Food Time Jerusalem (Mehadrin) is an Italian-style social cafe in conjunction with the Shekel Association, which works to integrate people with disabilities into the labor market. It took over from Harutzim in Talpiot  – read a full review here.

Alma restaurant on Rivlin Street has opened a soup cafe on Yafo Street, near Davidka in Jerusalem. The cafe serves a variety of meat and vegetarian soups for 15-20 NIS, including kubbe soup.

Ratcha Georgian restaurant didn’t survive in either Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, so the owners are trying a different concept with a dairy bakery in Shuk HaCarmel called Lela.

G27 Bakery is a new local bistro and cafe in the Ramat Chen neighborhood of Ramat Gan, serving freshly-made pastries, salads, pasta, pizza and sandwiches. The menu was designed by Chef Ran Shmueli of Claro restaurant in Sarona*featured image is Eggs Benedict from G27 Bakery.


Jamali Forush is a new Hamara bar serving meat and wine, in a simple setting in Rishon LeZion. The menu includes burgers, steaks, meat skewers, as well as salads and vine leaves.

Al Hamayim fish restaurant on Sharon Beach in Herzliya Pituach is closed for renovations.

Not Kosher

Chef Asaf Gabay has opened a new fish restaurant called Sheine, on Nachalat Binyamin Street in Tel Aviv. The menu includes a variety of fish and seafood dishes and Gabay will run the restaurant with his wife Natalie.

The Old North (HaZafon Hayashan) is a new local tapas bar on the corner of Dizengoff and Yirmiyahu, where Jeremiah Cafe used to be. As well as a varied menu of sharing dishes, the bar also has some interesting cocktails. For now they are open just in the evening but they plan to open for brunch on Friday and Shabbat in the near future.

Naifa Mulla is the new head chef at L28 Culinary Platform, a restaurant in Tel Aviv which offers an accelerator for innovative chef entrepreneurs. Naifa is from the Israeli Druze village of Yarka and will bring traditional Druze dishes to the L28 menu. I am excited to try her food!

Celebrity Chef Israel Aharoni and his son Uri have opened the Shenkin Butcher (Katzaviah b’Shenkin), a butcher and delicatessen close to the Chef’s home on Shenkin. The store will only serve local meat, with an aging fridge and the chef will be available to give cooking advice when he is in the store.

Other News

Susu & Sons opened its twelfth branch in Hod Hasharon.

Fans of Craft Pizza in Shuk Machane Yehuda will be pleased to hear that they will be opening a new branch on Shlomtzion HaMalka, near the corner with Yafo. The new branch is due to open in a few months and will feature a coal oven which has been manufactured especially for the store, as well as their delicious sourdough pizza, the restaurant will also serve pies and salads.

The owners of Hatch are opening a new concept called Shmaltz, a casual Ashkenazi delicatessen in Ramat Eshkol. The new store is due to open in January.

The Baraka House Group which owns Kitchen Market, Mashya, Magreb and Onza has fired Chef Yossi Shitrit as the head chef of their group.

Last month I reported that Chef Victor Gloger is no longer associated with Chloelys in the Hilton Tel Aviv and Hola in the Dan Tel Aviv, having been a partner with the owners for 18 years. This month’s update is that Hola will close in November and in its place will be a restaurant by Chef Hillel Tavakoli, who was most recently head chef at Pastel Tel Aviv and prior to that was part of the team who opened Claro restaurant in Sarona. It will be interesting to see what type of restaurant he will be opening in the Dan Tel Aviv.
