News and reviews on the Foodie Israel scene.

It seems that eating out is back in full swing and with it comes more new restaurants. Israel foodie highlights this month include the Jerusalem Talbiye group opening their first kosher restaurant Fringe, a new kosher food truck complex in Moshav Sho’eva Mashav Food Trucks, and a new cafe from Chef Eyal Shani.

Kosher Restaurant News

Baker Saloon is a cocktail bar in Petah Tikva from the owner of Dreamerie Bakery. The menu includes bar food dishes such as fish cigars, fish & chips, tuna tataki, and mushrooms filled with polenta.

BaLaDy is a Druze restaurant in Florentine in Tel Aviv, with live music. BaLaDy serves pita with labneh, malabi with blue syrup and knafe with Turkish ice cream in Florentine in Tel Aviv, with live music.

Fringe is a dairy and fish restaurant on the ground floor of the Jerusalem Theater from the Talbiye group. The menu focuses on Levantine dishes like Shishbarak with spinach, Burek with eggplant and sheep yogurt, and Lachma Bajin with minced fish. For now, Fringe is only open for dinner but in the future, it will also be open for lunch.

Halati is a meat street food stall in the Shuk Machane Yehuda. The stall serves sandwiches with a variety of fillings including challah filled with schnitzel or asado and croissant with asado or tuna.

Helena (Mehadrin) is a bar and restaurant in a historic building in Beit Shean with a modern menu focusing on meat dishes and a range of cocktails.

Klara is a meat shipud restaurant in Rishon Le Zion from the Gorme Delicatessen chain. Skewers served include beef fillet, veal sweetbreads, and foie gras.

LaLaLa (Mehadrin) is an Italian cafe, restaurant and deli in Raanana. Daytime items include truffle scrambled egg sandwich, Italian frittata with potatoes and parmesan, and bruschetta with pesto, fried eggplant, egg and basil. The lunch and dinner menu includes mushroom pizza,  burrata salad, and beet and goat cheese tortellini.

Mashav Food Trucks is a food truck complex in Moshav Sho’eva (next to Shoresh) by the owners of Derech Hagefen and Naya. Food options include tacos, burgers, pizza and ice cream.

Nineish is a kosher bar in Matalon Park in Petah Tikva. The menu includes dishes such as ceviche, challah with schnitzel, Arais, and minute steak bruschetta.

Stella Bakery is a cafe, bakery and patisserie in Kiryat Ono serving a selection of bread, cheeses, cakes, spreads, salads and wine.

Victor Dagim (Unsupervised) is a small fish tavern in Levinsky Shuk, Tel Aviv by Benny Briga, the owner of Cafe Levinsky and author of the recent Gazoz recipe book. The menu includes pickled fish, fried fish and grilled fish dishes

ZOKO by Izidor Segal (Tzohar) is a smoked meat restaurant in Kiryat Ono. It was originally opened as a pop-up but is now a permanent fixture.

Not Kosher Restaurant News

Alexander is a boutique French-style bakery in Tel Aviv. Specialties include Basque cheesecake, creme brulee filled croissants,  banana cookie pastry, caramel croffin and Gramoshka – an accordion-shaped pastry with a mango and passion fruit filling.

Pastry Chef Alon Shabo has opened a new patisserie near Levinski Market in South Tel Aviv.

Arty Bakery is a cafe and bakery near Kikar HaMedina serving sweet and savory pastries.

Beach Club Haifa is a restaurant on Dado Beach in Haifa attached to a surf club overlooking the sea. The open kitchen allows diners to see their dishes being prepared in front of them and the design is Greek themed. The restaurant is in partnership with Lehem Erez and features many baked goods on the menu.

Bingo Burger is a new burger restaurant overlooking Gordon Beach in Tel Aviv by Chef Guy Gamzo of NuNuNu. As well as classic burgers, Bingo also serves a crispy chicken sandwich, a fish burger, a vegan burger, mac & cheese, chicken nuggets and chicken wings.

Cafe Asif is a cafe inside the Asif Culinary Institute in Tel Aviv. The cafe is run by the owners of Cafe Puaa and Shifra Deli.

Cafe Romano is a cafe from Chef Eyal Shani in Beit Romano in Tel Aviv. The cafe is open during the day and serves a selection of sweet and savory pastries. Beit Romano also houses Romano restaurant, HaTeder Pizza and Teder Bar.

Capella is an exclusive bar in the Pop and Pope complex on the 14th floor of the Hagag Building in Tel Aviv. The website says that no mobile phones are allowed but I have already seen footage that someone put on Instagram from their table.

Deli Ray is a deli by Chef Omer Miller of Susu & Sons with a branch in Raanana and a second branch opening soon in Hod HaSharon. The deli sells ready-made food such as couscous, meatballs, Osso Bucco and a large selection of salads. They also sell cheeses from Jacob’s farm, deli meat, olives, as well as bread and pastries from Miller’s Moon Bakery. The store sells all the ingredients people need to make Miller’s recipes at home.

Fishbone is an Izakaya bar, an informal Japanese after-work bar serving Japanese-themed cocktails and sushi.

Gambit Bar is a cocktail lounge in central Jerusalem featuring live performances and wine tastings from various wineries.

HaTanur is a street food restaurant on Dizengoff in Tel Aviv serving pita with various fillings such as steak & egss, asado, chicken breast, pargit, liver, kebab and roasted cauliflower. Dishes can also be ordered on a plate with roasted vegetables and baked potato. Delivery via Wolt.

Hummus By Mattarello is a hummus bar on Kibbutz Ein Zivan in the Golan, from the owners of Mattarello Cafe.

Menachem is a deli and restaurant opposite Bugrashov Beach in Tel Aviv with the option to dine in the restaurant or create a picnic for eating on the beach.

Monti 41 is a cafe and deli on Montefiore Street in Tel Aviv, serving fresh pizza, focaccia and other pastries.

Mr Something Lounge is a contemporary Japanese member’s bar and lounge in Old Jaffa overlooking the sea. The food is prepared by Chef Dean Shoshani “Hizmi” and there are three different dining areas with different themes. Paris is a private room for 16 people, Hong Kong is a salon for 6 people and Tokyo is a dining table for 10 people.

Najma is a Levantine-style restaurant overlooking the beach in Haifa. The menu includes Arabic classics like shish barak stuffed with spinach, tuna niya – a cross between kibbeh niya and tuna tartare and Turkish Adana kebab.

Of BeShenkin (Chicken on Shenkin) is a new rotisserie by Chef Israel Aharoni serving roast chicken and chicken sandwiches, connected to his butcher chain Katsavia.

RakBurger is a burger delivery service in Jerusalem.

Shiriz is a bakery in Givatayim serving European-style baked goods in a Parisian-style store.

Sprinkles Bakery is an American-style bakery in Tel Aviv, with a French influence. Specialty items include smores with caramelized cornflakes, whoopie pie cookies, rocky road bars and a selection of cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies. The store is open on Shabbat, but the products are all kosher.

The Middle is a hybrid between a sports bar, a wine bar and a cocktail bar in Sarona Market owned by restaurateur and mixologist, Mosh Bodnik of Social Club.

Villa Mare is a meat and seafood restaurant overlooking Bograshov beachfront in Tel Aviv. The menu includes seafood, fish, salads, pasta, risotto, burgers and other meat dishes.

Dok restaurant in Tel Aviv has reopened in a new location on Ibn Gvirol

Harvey’s Smokehouse (Mehuderet) in Jerusalem has moved location and is now at 33 Yaffo Street next to Mike’s Place where R&R Diner used to be.

Joz Ve Loz in South Tel Aviv is moving to a new location as the original building is being demolished.

Chef Guy Arish is the new chef at Mashya in Tel Aviv

The Garden Terrace in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Jerusalem has opened for the summer. The cocktail and tapas bar is located on the fourth floor of the hotel. Dishes served include crispy potato with herb aioli, tempura cauliflower with tahina and tomato salsa, and Arais.
